Promoting the Health of Our LGBTQI Elders

Jason Flatt, PhD, MPH Pronouns: He/Him/His

As of January, 2020, Jason will be a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Social and Behavioral Program at the University of Nevada, San Las Vegas, School of Public Health. Jason’s current research works to better understand the risk and protective factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias among LGBTQ seniors. For the past ten years, Jason has leveraged his platform as a public health researcher to work as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

To further the reach of his research and advocacy efforts, he partners with InterACT Advocates, SAGE, Los Angeles LGBT Center, and Center on Halsted in Chicago, IL. He is also partnering with Openhouse in San Francisco, where he created the Open House: Building H.O.U.S.E. (Healthy Outcomes Using a Supportive Environment) for LGBTQ Older Adults, which will examine the influence of affordable housing on the health of LGBTQ older adults. His work has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, U.S. News and World Report, NPR, Newsweek as well as international news outlets. Adults aged 60 and older are one of the fastest growing groups, including those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) in the United States. Jason’s hope is that his current research and advocacy efforts will shape the training of care-providers, creating a more inclusive aging environment for LGBTQI+ individuals. Jason and his husband live in the Las Vegas area with their two boston terriers, Brain and Bowie, and their yorkie mix, Tuna.
